Am I ready to start the A.R.E?

What is A.R.E. 3.1?

A.R.E. is the Architect Registration Exam required for licensure as an Architect. It is a standardized nationwide exam created by NCARB, meaning it is identical in all states. ARE 3.1 is the current version of the exam. You must complete 3.1 testing by June 2009. After this date you will transition to 4.0. Passing Building Technology and Site Planning are essential to secure transition of most Multiple Choice exams. Please see transition chart.

What is A.R.E. 4.0?

A.R.E. 4.0 was released July 2008. It combines the graphic exams with the multiple choice exams.

When is the exam? How often do they hold the exam?

The ARE is composed of (9) computer based exams. Exams are scheduled by you any day of the year once you receive authorization to test from your state board. It is scheduled through Thomson Prometric, a computer exam center./p>

What degree do I need to become licensed?

In California you can have a NAAB accredited 1st Professional Degree in Architecture, non-architecture degree, no degree but 8 years work under supervision of an Architect.

(5) year BArch

(2) or (3) year MArch is equal to (5) year BArch

You can apply for authorization to test immediately upon graduation.

Can I take The exam this year?

In California you can receive authorization to start testing with (5) years education or work or combination of both.

If I pass the ARE what would be other  requirements to get the license?

If you start testing now, you need IDP + CIDP + California Supplemental.

If you started testing before 2005, you need California Supplemental exam + total of (8) year education and/or work experience

Would it be valid let's say for another 3 years when I get enough experience to be licensed?

California has implemented the 5-year rolling clock. Your exam score is valid for good if you complete all (9) exams within a 5-year period. If you only pass a portion of the (9) exams, you will have to retake these portions if you have not completed all (9) exams within 5-years. ARE 3.1 expires July 2009, you must complete it by this time.

Who are the instructors?

Professionals + Professors at university level who have passed the computerized ARE 3.1 or 4.0 Link
